Additional learning support
At our school, teaching and learning extend beyond the classroom. We are committed to providing a supportive, inclusive, and responsive educational environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
We prioritise ensuring that every student is ready and able to engage in learning. Our dedicated support for students with disability and additional learning needs enables them to fully participate in all aspects of school life.
You do not need a formal diagnosis for your child to receive support in a mainstream class. Support can begin at any stage of school.
Support that fits your child's needs
Some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work closely with families to create individualised support plans and adjustments that meet each child’s needs.
At our school, we provide a diverse range of supports that nurture every student’s learning, success and wellbeing throughout their educational journey.
Additional learning support can include:
-
teachers and support staff working together with families (and students, if needed)
-
specialist support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
-
providing tailored programs to help high potential and gifted students with their advanced learning needs
-
small group tutoring to provide targeted literacy and numeracy support for students
-
regular check-ins to review and update the planned supports
-
changes to the classrooms:
- accessible classrooms
- assistive technology
- instructional resources
-
extra guidance, simpler content or different focus during lessons
-
assessment adjustments:
- more time
- simpler language
- breaks during tasks
- different ways to complete a task (e.g. oral presentations instead of written tasks).
Our school places strong emphasis on early identification and ongoing monitoring of student learning needs. We conduct withdrawal exams and diagnostic assessments that provide valuable insights into student progress and readiness. These assessments allow us to:
- Identify specific areas requiring intervention
- Provide immediate feedback and learning adjustments
- Develop targeted learning goals collaboratively with the LaST, classroom teachers, and support staff.
Smooth transitions between school stages are essential for fostering student confidence and success. To support this, our Teaching and Learning team focuses on key transition periods:
- Year 6 to Year 7 Transition: In partnership with local primary schools, we work to ensure that incoming students become familiar with our routines, expectations, and support networks, helping make the move to high school seamless.
- Year 10 to Year 11 Transition: As students move into their senior years, we provide tailored academic and wellbeing support, assisting them to make informed subject choices and prepare for Stage 6 learning.
Our school supports students in preparing for key assessments, including:
- NAPLAN
- HSC Minimum Standard Tests
- Check-in Assessments
Our LaSTs works closely with students in the lead-up to these assessments, providing preparation sessions, practice tests, and strategies to build test-taking skills and reduce anxiety.
For students with more complex or individualised learning needs, we:
- Develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs) in collaboration with families and staff to guide adjustments and monitor student progress.
- Arrange alternative placements (when appropriate), ensuring students are supported in learning environments that best meet their academic and emotional needs.
We know when a student needs help when:
- teachers notice changes in learning or behaviour
- reviewing assessment results and learning progress
- parents and carers raise concerns or ask for support.
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed. If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.
Our learning and support team
Our learning and support team helps make sure every student gets the help they need at the right time. At the centre of our student support system is our Learning and Support Teacher (LaST). This specialised role is essential in helping students overcome barriers to learning and promoting equitable access to education.
Empowering every learner:
The Learning and Support Teacher’s role
Our LaST works closely with classroom teachers, parents, carers, and school leadership to identify students who require additional learning support. Once identified, the LaST provides targeted, one-on-one assistance, as well as small group interventions tailored to the specific literacy and numeracy needs of students.
The role of a Learning and Support Teacher (LaST):
- Collaborates with classroom teachers to develop differentiated learning strategies and adjustments that support diverse learning needs in mainstream classrooms.
- Coordinates and implements Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students requiring personalised learning approaches.
- Leads data-informed planning, drawing on student assessments and classroom performance to guide targeted interventions.
- Supports the development of social-emotional skills and learner confidence, often working alongside wellbeing staff to ensure students feel safe and supported.
The LaST plays a strategic role in the success of all students needing additional support, ensuring that no learner is left behind.
Supporting every learner:
The School Learning Support Officer’s role
Complementing the work of the LaST, our School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs) provide practical, day-to-day support across multiple learning settings.
The role of a School Learning Support Officer (SLSO):
- Deliver small group tuition in both literacy and numeracy, reinforcing core skills through guided practice and structured activities.
- Provide in-class support for students in mainstream settings, helping them remain engaged and on task while promoting independence and confidence.
Working under the guidance of teaching staff and the LaST, SLSOs are an essential part of our inclusive learning framework.
