What students learn

Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.

In NSW, syllabuses are developed within Key Learning Areas (KLAs) that describe broad areas of learning.

Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) /

Technological and Applied Studies (TAS)

Our CAPA/TAS faculty is dedicated to nurturing students' creativity, technical skills, and practical knowledge through a wide range of engaging programs in Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Design and Technology and Food Technology.

Students in Years 7 and 8 explore their talents through the Technology Mandatory, Visual Arts, and Music syllabus, while those in Years 9 and 10 can follow their passions by choosing from a range of exciting elective subjects.

Our Year 10 Careers Program is all about helping students discover their passions, explore possibilities, and take the first steps toward exciting future pathways.

Students take part in a range of experiences that build confidence, skills, and real-world understanding.

Careers classes Students explore options and plan pathways that fit their abilities, interests, and ambitions.
Careers counselling Providing one-on-one guidance to help students explore their education, training, and career options.
Work experience placements Offering students a real taste of working life. It’s a chance to explore careers they’re interested in, learn new skills, and gain hands-on experience in a supportive, supervised environment.
Work Inspirations In partnership with The Smith Family, gives students the chance to explore workplaces, meet professionals, and discover diverse career opportunities.
Fast Forward A Western Sydney University program for selected Year 9 and 10 students who demonstrate academic and/or leadership potential.
Pathways to Dreaming A Western Sydney University program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 7–10, helping them to set and achieve educational, career and personal goals.
TAFE’s Start Your Future An initiative that provides students with experience in a TAFE style, vocational education, learning environment.
School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) Available to eligible Year 10 students. Students combine paid part-time work, training, and their final years of school to earn a qualification and work experience.
Volunteering Challenge Offering students in Years 9 and 10 the opportunity to give back to their community while developing valuable life and employability skills.
Careers Expos and Job Readiness Workshops Students are offered valuable opportunities to develop real-world employability skills and explore future pathways.
Educational Pathways Program Providing additional resources, opportunities, and support to help students plan and pursue their future pathways with confidence.
Pre-apprenticeship Courses Students have the opportunity to undertake an introductory trade or industry unit allowing them to 'get a taste of the trade or industry' before committing to a full time apprenticeship or traineeship.
English

Our English faculty is committed to developing students’ communication, critical thinking, and creativity through a rich and engaging curriculum. English is taught through a mandatory syllabus from Year 7 to Year 10, focusing on the key skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to extend their learning and showcase their talents through a variety of exciting opportunities, including:

  • Debating and public speaking competitions – building confidence, teamwork, and persuasive communication skills.
  • Book Week celebrations – promoting a love of reading and creative expression across the school community.
Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE)

The Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) faculty provides students with the knowledge and skills to explore how people, societies, and environments interact. This key learning area includes History and Geography, both of which are mandatory from Year 7 to Year 10, ensuring every student develops a strong understanding of the world around them.

Through engaging lessons and hands-on learning experiences, students investigate Australia’s past, its global connections, and the importance of active citizenship.

A highlight of the HSIE program is the annual Year 9 and 10 excursion to Canberra, where students have the opportunity to explore some of Australia’s most significant national institutions, including:

  • Australian War Memorial
  • Parliament House
  • Museum of Australian Democracy
Languages

Our students student German in Year 8 as part of the mandatory curriculum. In Years 9 and 10, students have the option to continue language study as an elective subject.

Learning a language helps students develop strong communication skills, understand languages as systems, and explore the deep connection between language and culture. Through their studies, students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their own perspectives and interactions within a global context.

Library

The Diana Creighton Library named in honour of a dedicated educator who continues to make a contribution to our school community, stands as a place of learning, inspiration, and connection.

The library is a vibrant hub for literacy and discovery, providing students and staff with access to a wide range of quality books, digital resources, and research materials that support teaching and learning across all subjects.

Opening Hours
The Diana Creighton Library is open to students every day during recess and lunch breaks.

Mathematics

Our Mathematics faculty is dedicated to developing students’ confidence, problem-solving skills, and logical thinking through engaging and practical learning experiences. Mathematics is a mandatory subject from Year 7 to Year 10, ensuring every student builds a strong foundation in numeracy and analytical reasoning.

Learning is brought to life through fun and interactive challenges that make maths both enjoyable and rewarding.

Highlights include:

  • Maths Quiz of the Day – a popular weekly challenge where students test their skills and compete for prizes by answering questions displayed on our internal electronic screens.
  • Amazing Race Mathematics Day – an exciting annual event held at Nurragingy Reserve, where students from across the Chifley College campuses work in teams to solve mathematical puzzles and complete challenges along the way.

Through these activities, students not only strengthen their mathematical understanding but also develop teamwork, communication, and critical thinking — skills that prepare them for success in everyday life and future study.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)

At our school we proudly provide outstanding sporting facilities and opportunities that inspire our students to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Our modern facilities and wide range of sports and fitness activities, encouraging student participation and skill development.

Science

Our Science faculty inspires curiosity, discovery, and innovation through engaging, hands-on learning experiences. Science is taught through a curriculum, mandatory for students up to Year 10 with a focus on scientific investigation, problem-solving, and core disciplines including Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

Students are encouraged to explore and understand the world around them through practical experiments, inquiry-based projects, and real-world applications of scientific knowledge.

Highlights of our Science program include:

  • STEM immersion - experiences with universities and industry partners that spark interest in future STEM pathways.
