Reading Focus Group is a withdrawal opportunity offered by the Teaching and Learning Faculty in which selected students in stage 4 and 5 will be working together in a small group with a Learning and Support Teacher (LaST).
There are currently over twenty different Reading Groups operating in the Teaching and Learning Faculty, targeting eight different reading levels. These programs monitor student skills and recognise the strength in our students.
The aim of this program is to foster a love of reading and to improve students' literacy by explicitly teaching and practising reading comprehension strategies.
In 2022, our students experienced outstanding growth in their reading skills. Some students moved up as many as five levels in a single year.
What do the students think of their reading groups?
"I like the reading group because it helps us for our classes. I feel happy going to the Library to borrow books now. The activities we do are fun!"
- Abi and Amy (Year 9)
"I love going to Reading groups! I also get to know other people in my year who aren't in my class."
- Owen (Year 8)
"I love spending time on my own with a teacher to help me improve my reading. I feel like I have improved so much with my work. It's great!!"
- Fiasili (Year 8)
